The city of brotherly, and sisterly, love has always been hallow ground for the GD and the recent incarnations of the Dead and now Furthur. The recording is an excellent Aud that puts you right in the venue without overwhelming the music with crowd noise. Finally, they had mercy on us, ending the set with Not Fade Away. Unbroken Chain and the Wheel were almost gratuitous by this point, but were played to near perfection. John milks his voice and guitar for every ounce of emotion, building up the final section with exquisite precision, very much like the fat man used to do, aided by a generous helping of Phil bombs. Anyone who thinks John is just doing Jerry's licks without any heart or passion (I'm referencing a review of Stroudsburg) needs to hear this. This was a magnificent Dew of 1974 proportions. The song itself ripped, with tremendous play by John and Jeff on their solos, and a dramatic ending that could only be followed by the Dew. It was kinda cool for him to try, though. John was unable to complete the theme accurately any one time, probably because it just didn't work in that context. The First Tube tease in Let It Grow was about the only weak moment in the set. John and Jeff handled the composed part with alacrity. The drumming was even more intense on Terrapin Flyer, where a few sparse instrumental sections gave Russo his moment to shine. The original was good for spacing out to, but this arrangement, with Russo's relentless drumming driving the band, brought the energy. I like the way they've energized Blues for Allah into a tune that moves. Stephen brought the energy up, and, although the jam took a while to get going, featured some intense playing before they transitioned back into the song.Īt that point, they started into the esoteric part of the show. eased them and me into the 2nd set at a mellow pace, punctuated by some more intense jamming between the last couple verses.

After a first set that started out great (Shakedown!!) but fizzled late (as in a slow Sailor>Saint, not among my favorites), I figured maybe they were tired at the end of a long tour. My jaw hit the floor several times as they rolled out one great tune after another.

No Dark Star, but a star-studded 2nd set no less.
